What is Earth Day and what is it supposed to accomplish?

About 48 years ago, on April 22, 1970, millions of people took to the streets to protest against the negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development.

In the USA and around the world, smog was becoming deadly and evidence was growing that contamination caused delays in children’s development. Biodiversity was in decline as a result of the intensive use of pesticides and other pollutants.

The global ecological conscience was growing, and the US Congress. UU And President Nixon responded quickly. In July of the same year, they created the Environmental Protection Agency and robust environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act, among many others.

One billion people

Earth Day is now a global event every year, and we believe that more than one billion people in 192 countries are now participating in the largest day of action focused on civil society in the world.

It is a day of political action and civic participation. People march, sign petitions, meet with their elected officials, plant trees and clean their cities and roads. Corporations and governments use it to make promises and announce sustainability measures. Faith leaders, including Pope Francis, connect Earth Day with the protection of God’s greatest creations, humans, biodiversity and the planet on which we all live.

Earth Day Network, the organization that leads Earth Day around the world, announced today that Earth Day 2018 will focus on mobilizing the world to end plastic pollution, including the creation of support for a global effort to eliminate single-use plastics together with the global regulation for plastic removal. EDN will educate millions of people about the health and other risks associated with the use and disposal of plastics, including the pollution of our oceans, water and wildlife, and the growing evidence that the decomposition of plastics is creating serious problems global

From the poisoning and damage to marine life to the omnipresent presence of plastics in our food, to the alteration of human hormones and the main deadly diseases and early puberty, the exponential growth of plastics is threatening the survival of our planet. EDN has developed a multi-year campaign to eliminate plastic pollution. Our goals include ending single-use plastics, promoting alternatives to fossil fuel-based materials, promoting 100 percent plastics recycling, corporate and government responsibility and changing human behavior in relation to plastics.
