Gabrielle d’Estrées – Biography


Gabrielle d’Estrées (1573-1599), mistress of Henry IV of France. She was the daughter of Antoine d’Estrees, Marquis de Coeuvres. In 1590, Henry stayed at Coeuvres and fell passionately in love with Gabrielle d’Estrées. In 1591 she became his mistress. Her formal marriage (1592) to Nicolas d’Amerval, Seigneur de Liancourt, was annulled in 1594.

Henry showered Gabrielle with honors, making her Marquise de Monceaux (1595), Duchess de Beaufort (1597), and Duchess d’Etampes (1598). She bore Henry three children: Cesar, Duke de Vendome, first of the Vendome branch of the Bourbons; Catherine Henriette, Duchess d’Elbeuf; and Alexandre, later prior of France. Henry was planning to divorce Marguerite de Valois and marry Gabrielle d’Estrées, when she died in pregnancy on April 10, 1599, in Paris.
