LAPITHAE, a mythical race of Thessaly. Pirithoiis was their king. The story of their struggle against the Centaurs is a frequent subject in art and literature. The final contest occurred when the Centaurs attempted to carry off Hippodamia, the bride of Pirithoiis, at their marriage feast. Aided by Theseus, the Lapithae destroyed or drove from their homes the last of the Centaurs on Pelion. This fight was recorded in sculpture on the pediment of the temple of Zeus in Olympia.
