L’avare Summary


L’AVARE, a French comic drama in prose by Moliere, first produced in 1668. The play shows Moliere’s genius for combining satire, humor, and romantic interest.
L’avare (The Miser) is set in 17th-century Paris. Harpagon tries to prevent his daughter Elise and his son Cleante from marrying the humble lovers they have chosen. Instead, he hopes to marry Elise to a wealthy older man, and himself to wed Cleante’s beloved, Mariane. However, Harpagon’s plan is foiled because his fear of losing money makes him easy to manipulate.
