SPIDER MONKEY, any of a genus, Ateles, of monkeys (family Cebidae) having long spiderlike limbs, found from parts of Mexico and Central America to southern Brazil and Paraguay. Completely arboreal, they swing from branch to branch by their hooklike hands. They also have flexible, prehensile tails that are longer than the head and body combined. The tail also functions as a sensitive organ of touch. The hair of spider monkeys is rather long, often black or dusky, but in some species shows tints of gray, yellow, or reddish brown. Spider monkeys associate in small troops and feed on fruits, nuts, and insects. They are intelligent animals and are gentle and tractable in captivity.
