ARBORETUM, a place set aside for the cultivation of trees and shrubs for scientific and educational purposes. An arboretum is a living collection of woody plants and usually contains many species not native to its own area. In line with its educational purposes, an arboretum usually has its collections arranged according to some predetermined order, as, for instance, their systematic relationships, tf^ir commercial uses, or their ecological associations.

Important United States arboretums include the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, Boston, Mass.; the National Arboretum, Washington, D.C.; the Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, Mo.; and the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum, Arcadia, Calif. Especially noted among European arboretums are the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England; the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, Scotland; and the Jardin des Plantes, Paris.
